Take Part - Join YMT!Adventures in Music Theatre
YMT's Programme of Activities
Youth Music Theatre UK is a national company working across the UK and Ireland with people aged 11-21 interested in the performing arts.
We specialise in creating brand new musicals, which means we don't do pre-existing work (or 'repertoire') like West Side Story, Spring Awakening, Grease or Annie etc. At YMT, you will work with leading theatre professionals to create something that is totally new, truly unique and all yours!
Whatever way you choose to get involved with us, you will be fully involved in the creative process; not only will you develop your acting, singing and dancing abilities, you'll also learn how to work as an ensemble, share creative ideas and, most importantly, MAKE THEATRE - this is why YMT is so unique! Take a look below at how you can get involved with YMT.
Each summer, YMT creates at least EIGHT brand new full-scale productions with around 300 young people (the YMT Company). These are two/three-week residential projects where you'll work with a professional Artistic Team to create a new show that is performed to the public in a professional venue. YMT Summer Productions take place all across the UK in July/August and we perform in some really exciting venues including Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lyric Theatre Belfast, Sadler's Wells, Barbican Plymouth and lots more.
To take part on a summer production and join the YMT Company, you will need to audition. Each January and February, YMT tours the whole of the UK and Ireland on a National Auditions Tour. Auditions are open to absolutely anyone aged 11-21 and we look for actors, singers, dancers and musicians.
YMT Summer Productions - the Musicians
Every brand new full-scale production YMT creates requires a different number of musicians to perform, either in the pit band or on stage. These musicians join the YMT Company roughly half-way through the project, staying residentially to work with the professional music team. They work together to create a new show that is performed to the public in a professional venue during the summer. YMT Summer Productions take place all across the UK in July/August and we perform in some really exciting venues including Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lyric Theatre Belfast, Sadler's Wells, Barbican Plymouth and lots more.
To take part as a musician on a summer production, you will need to be at least grade 7 standard and audition to join the YMT Musician Pool. There are a range of ways you can audition.
Summer Camp Courses are similar to our Summer Productions in that you'll create a brand new show with a professional Artistic Team, however they are six-days long and DO NOT REQUIRE AN AUDITION. These residential activitiy holidays are open to ANYONE aged 11-21 looking to explore their potential and develop their acting, singing and dancing abilities. Courses offer fun, intense and creative training to help build confidence and give you essential performing arts skills. Summer Camp Courses take place across the UK throughout July/August.
To take part on a YMT Summer Camp Course, you just need to book your place - it works on a first come, first served basis.
We run an exciting course for young people aged 16-21 who are interested in gaining experience working backstage on one of our Summer Productions as an Assistant Stage Manager. You'll work with a professional technical team in a professional venue and learn about anything from props and costumes to lighting, sound and stage management. An opportunity for emerging artists. The YMT Creative Trainee Scheme offers those studying at university/college or recent graduates experience working on one of YMT's Summer Productions as an Assistant Musical Director, Assistant/Associate Designer, Assistant Choreographer, Assistant Director or Deputy Stage Manager.
