Gerry Flanagan is a well-known and respected teacher/director/clown practitioner.
He is Artistic Director of Shifting Sands Theatre. He has performed with many companies including the David Glass Ensemble, Complicite and Bubble Theatre. He worked in Italy for three years,teaching clowning and performing with Clown Selvaggio.
In 1998 he founded Shifting Sands to create stimulating, accessible theatre that is both comic and emotionally rich. Shows include: Faustus- A Devilish Comedy, Romeo & Juliet, Great Expectations, The Deadline, The Devil’s Doctor , The Seagull and The King Lear. He has performed in and directed all the Shifting Sands shows.
Since its inception Shifting Sands has run Street Theatre projects. The Secret Agents have been particularly successful.
Gerry’s other directing credits include - Box to Hawaii for Theatre Kurt in Frankfurt;
Fools!Fools!Fools! (a clown show) and Don’t Let Go (a masked Commedia show) for Chung Ying Theatre Company in Hong Kong; When in Rome and I am a Viking for Gonzo Moose. He has directed many musicals for YMT:UK including Great Expectations, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Love and Madness.
Outdoor shows he has directed include The Bull Show and The Picturescope for
Martinez and Fabrega plus The Picture House for SwizzleShaker and Desert Island
Discs for Artizani.
For over 20 Gerry has taught Clown and related subjects - Physical Theatre, Playing with Text, Commedia dell’Arte ,Storytelling made Physical, Clown, Mask, Street Theatre,
Devising, Improvisation and Bouffon - and ran performance projects BTEC to Degree and to Postgraduate Level. Teaching projects often include the devising and touring of a performance.
