Have you ever felt nervous about an audition before? Or perhaps, this is your first audition and the nerves are almost too much to bear? Well, at YMT we take extra care to ensure that our audition process is cultivated in a welcoming and encouraging environment. Our inclusive workshop style auditions ensure that all ages and all experience levels feel comfortable and welcome in order to ensure the best possible performance from our young performers.
Below is a testimonial from a past participant, 13 year old Nico Shaw, about his audition experience with YMT
“When I got into the audition room there were about 20 teenagers, boys and girls, all with the same uneasy expression on their faces.
The examiners were not what I was expecting; I thought they would be sternly watching for our every mistake and making our nerves even worse, but instead, they were friendly people who smiled and helped us to relax.
We started off with some dancing, it was good fun, and it helped that all of the teachers came round and suggested things that might help us improve.
Next was singing, the teachers sometimes stopped us to tell us to do something differently but they managed to do it in a way which did not make you feel they were being critical. The atmosphere was encouraging and I felt that they just wanted us to do well, I began to relax and was able to do my best.
The final stage of the audition was the acting part. This was amazing: we acted out our pieces and then everyone joined in making it feel like real life; the audition room melted away and we were all absorbed into each-others work.
I would like to say a massive thanks to the teachers who stopped me from feeling nervous and made my Youth Music Theatre UK Audition an unforgettable experience.”
After his YMT audition, Nico went on to be cast in one of our summer shows, Cautionary Tales. Don’t let nerves keep you from auditioning with YMT, take the leap and book your audition slot now. You never know where it could take you.

Taking place at South Hill Park Arts Centre, 10-12 August, the brand new Help! Get Me Out of This Musical is a hilariously bonkers and endearing love song to musical theatre! Littered with references (and cheeky parodies!) of our favourite West End and Broadway hits, it is an unforgettable experience for all lovers (and even haters!) of musical theatre.
And who better to ceate the music for this celebratory show other than award-winning film, TV and theatre composer, Alexander Rudd.
Alexander has been the featured UK Composer in the International Artists Workshop for the European Union. His concert works have been performed throughout Europe, UK and the U.S.A. His theatre work includes numerous commissions in the UK and U.S and collaborated on numerous musicals. Having been awarded the highest prize for composition at Trinity College of Music, he won a Fulbright Scholarship to study film scoring at USC. In 2009, Alexander moved to the US to study Film Scoring at the University of Southern California's Thornton School Of Music in Los Angeles.
Having worked on the music for film hits such as Unknown (Warner Bros) (starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger), as well as having conducted music for the sensational TV series, Lost (ABC), Alexander's musical talent and skill is highly respected.
Whilst studying in LA he was fortunate enough to meet and learn from composer and songwriter Randy Newman (Joy, Monster’s University, Toy Story) who became his mentor. Alexander’s latest collaborations include an album of new songs co-written with academy- award-winning lyricist Don Black (Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun). The album entitled Stay Away From Stars was recorded with the English Session Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, featuring the vocals of Mica Paris, Mairead Carlin and Polly Gibbons and a new classical/rock album with Alex James (Blur) for Sony/ATV.
So come on down to hear Alexander's new music in Help! Get Me Out of This Musical - it's a treat you will be gutted to miss!
We caught up with Lottie to hear about her YMT experience of Summer Camps and Projects
This was the best decision I made!
My first experience with YMT was in 2015 when I auditioned for their summer season, it was my first time doing group auditions like that - I didn’t get in but decided to do one of their Summer Camp Courses instead. This was the best decision I made!
It was my first ever residential theatre course and it was absolutely amazing! I met some amazing people and had a brilliant week, I learnt so much and feel that it led to a real ‘step change’ for me.
Each time I’ve been involved with YMT it’s got bigger and better
In 2017 I successfully auditioned and performed in YMT's Jabberwocky and that was even more amazing! Each time I’ve been involved with YMT it’s got bigger and better and I think that’s partly because I learn so much each time and get new opportunities!
To everyone who loves musical theatre
I’d recommend YMT to anyone who loves theatre and performing or putting a show together, to anyone who has a desire to work in the industry in the future, who wants to have a great time with like-minded people during the Summer holidays, to everyone who loves musical theatre (and is the right age!)”
Follow in the footsteps of Lottie and many other talented young people and book on to a Summer Camp today. Open to ANYONE aged 11-17, participants take part in an intense, fun, creative training course in the performing arts by putting on a brand new musical show within a week! This year, YMT’s Musical Theatre Summer Camps are coming to Hertfordshire, Leeds, Wiltshire, Edinburgh, Surrey and London. BOOK NOW WHILE SPACES LAST!
Youth Music Theatre UK has an unwavering reputation for creating the brightest new musical theatre projects and courses, led by trailblazing creative teams from West End, Fringe, Repertoire and Broadway theatre. And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our *NEW* Musical Theatre Boot Camp taking place 13 – 18 August in London.
The YMT Musical Theatre Boot Camp comprises 60 hours of intensive tuition, rehearsals and masterclasses spread over a 6-day residential retreat, aimed to equip you with the unique skillset and knowledge needed to be competitive and to excel in the theatre industry. Whilst the course is beneficial for everyone, it is particularly beneficial for those interested in auditioning for drama school or conservatoire at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, which is why we believe Victoria Evaristo is the perfect candidate to direct the course.
Victoria brings to the table a wide array of experience in the theatre industry. As a Guildhall School of Music and Drama alumna, she has performed as an actor herself at many renowned theatres, such as the Hackney Empire, Royal Court Theatre Liverpool, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Everyman Theatre Liverpool and MANY more. Not only has Victoria made her mark in the UK, but she’s showcased her talents across Europe, Africa and the U.S.A.! She has even performed a one woman show entitled, “Ma Joyce’s Tales from the Parlour” at the world famous Eidinburgh Festival.
However, it is Victoria's experience in teaching and directing which will make the course unqiue and valuable for those who participate. She has led classes at mnay leading instititutions, including Italia Conti academy, Sylvia Young theatre school, Royal Central School of speech and drama, Identity Drama School, Big Foot theatre company, City University and numerous other places. In addition to all of this, she privately tutors students and professionals on audition prep, voice and script work.
Victoria will use her expertise to test your skills during the new 6-day, intensive residential Boot Camp. During the course, participants will have the opportunity to explore different approaches to making new music theatre and cross arts developments, including styles used in physical theatre, mask and Commedia dell’arte, as well as traditional musical theatre and performance techniques. Victoria will give you the tools you need to confidently apply to drama school or conservatoire.
There is still an opportunity to BOOK ON to the London Musical Theatre Boot Camp to train under the direction of Victoria and the other creatives, but be sure to book soon as spaces are limited!
