SPOTLIGHT: Ella Grace joins as Musical Director for YMT's Scotland Summer Camp

Youth Music Theatre UK has an unwavering reputation for creating the brightest new musical theatre projects and courses, led by trailblazing creative teams from West End, Fringe, Repertoire and Broadway theatre. And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our Scotland Summer Camp, taking place 6 – 11 August.

As the musical director of our Edinburgh Summer Camp this year, Ella Grace has an exceptional breadth of work under her belt. From writing the music and lyrics for an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Salome at the Walt Disney Modular Theatre, to working at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, Ella’s work is as technically marvellous as it is dazzling. We’re looking forward to Ella choreographing a brand-new show, The Vampire Hunters of Glasgow, at YMT’s Edinburgh Summer Camp (20 – 25 August).

An intense and creative course in singing, acting and dancing, Ella will put the 11-17 year olds through their paces by directing them in a brand-new musical in a week. Building confidence and developing key performing arts skills, the young people will excel under the direction of Ella and the rest of the experienced creative team. 

As a composer and lyricist, she is a recipient of the Michael Grandage Future Bursaries Award. As a performer herself, Ella fronted the rock bank Hitchcock Blonde for four years. She is writing the book, music, & lyrics for Nethergate, a contemporary Scottish retelling of Peter Pan, and is also adapting Peter Pan for a theatre in the USA.

SPOTLIGHT: Award-winning composer Tim Gilvin to lead YMT's Wiltshire Summer Camp.

And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our Wiltshire Summer Camp, taking place 30 July – 4 August.

As the musical director of our Wiltshire Summer Camp this year, composer and lyricist Tim Gilvin has worked extensively as a music leader and pianist with professionals and young people alike. For his musical, Stay Awake, Jake, Tim won The S&S Award 2014, which is one of the UK’s most prominent prizes for new musical theatre writing, as well as being nominated for 5 Broadway World Awards. We’re looking forward to Tim directing our very own Treacherous Tales & Famous Pirates at YMT’s Wiltshire Summer Camp (30 July – 4 August).

An intense and creative course in singing, acting and dancing, Tim will put the 11-17 year olds through their paces by directing them in a brand-new musical in a week. Building confidence and developing key performing arts skills, the young people will excel under the direction of Tim and the rest of the very experienced creative team. 

Tim’s songs have been played on the BBC and Channel 4, and one of his songs, ‘A Bigger Smile’, was performed at the Garrick (West End) in 2015 as part of the shortlist for the Stiles & Drewe Best New Song Prize. He is currently workshopping his show Kate and the Devil at Manchester Royal Exchange, as well as completing a commission for a new musical.

SPOTLIGHT: Welcome our London Summer Camp Choreographer, Lizzie Crarer.

And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our London Summer Camp, taking place 20 – 25 August.

As the choreographer of our London Summer Camp this year, Lizzie Crarer has an exceptional breadth of work under her belt. From running her own performance company (Heroine Projects Presents), to being a member of the renowned laboratory theatre ensemble, Eden’s Cave, Lizzie brings outstanding innovative techniques and experimental visions to her creative work. We’re looking forward to Lizzie choreographing our very own RESITANCE musical at YMT’s London Summer Camp (20 – 25 August).

An intense and creative course in singing, acting and dancing, Lizzie will put the 11-17 year olds through their paces by directing them in a brand-new musical in a week. Building confidence and developing key performing arts skills, the young people will excel under the direction of Lizzie and the rest of the experienced creative team. 

Lizzie has also assisted in directing plays at the Salisbury Playhouse and National Theatre, along with performing herself in productions such as Hamlet, Othello, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s at Theatre Royal Haymarket, to name a few. Lizzie is also part of Bath’s Natural Theatre Company, which specializes in outdoor and site specific performance.

SPOTLIGHT: Meet our Hertfordshire Summer Camp Director, Simon Kane.

And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our Hertfordshire Summer Camp taking place 30 Jul - 4 August.

Having trained at the University of Bristol and one of USA’s leading music conservatoires, the College-Conservatory of Music, Simon Kane’s work is as technically superb as it is stunning. From Infinite Joy at Southwark Playhouse to Robin Hood at Cohen Theatre, Simon will now be directing MI 5PY at YMT’s Hertfordshire Summer Camp (30 Jul – 4 August).

An intense and creative course in singing, acting and dancing, Simon will put the 11-17 year olds through their paces by directing them in a brand-new espionage-themed musical in a week. Building confidence and developing key performing arts skills, the young people will excel under the direction of our experienced creative team.

Along with being the Assistant Director for international theatrical productions such as Seussical in Honk Kong, Simon has also assisted in directing West End hits The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ and In The Heights. He was also part of the critically acclaimed project, Theatre Uncut, at London’s famous Young Vic. As a film producer/director, he was worked for clients including The BRIT Awards, The Times and The Sunday Times.

SPOTLIGHT: Introducing our Scotland Summer Camp Director, Matthew Eberhardt

And in the year of our 15th anniversary, this is no exception, especially in the case of our Scotland Summer Camp taking place 6-11 August.

Having directed operas, musicals, and new writing for new plays, Matthew Eberhardt is looking forward to directing the cast of a brand new musical show, The Vampire Hunters of Glasgow, at YMT’s Musical Theatre Summer Camp in Edinburgh.

Instead of Opera North, Grange Park Opera or Opera Holland Park, to name a few, Matthew will be travelling to Edinburgh this August to direct the cast of our Scotland Summer Camp. An intense and creative course in singing, acting and dancing, Matthew will put the 11-17 year olds through their paces by directing them in a brand new musical put on in a week.

Matthew has directed Trouble in Tahiti (Opera North, Leeds Grand Theatre and on tour), Legally Blonde (Putney Arts Theatre), and is currently Assistant Director for upcoming West End show Kiss Me, Kate, which will also be playing at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre and Leeds Grand Theatre. He has collaborated with revered theatre artists such as Aletta Collins, Annabel Arden and Luke Sheppard, and is looking forward to leading YMT’s Scotland Summer Camp this August.
